Croatia

See you, London, in 2 weeks' time!

The British Airways planes look like plane models from this high up! =)

Heathrow Airport, London, England (4 May 2014)

Cloud producing factories! =D

Somewhere between Belgium and Germany, on board British Airways enroute to Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Though I have never seen this place prior to this shot, I am confident enough to say that this is Weissensee, Austria, by matching the topography in this photo back to the satellite map in Google Maps. =D The power of information
 technology!

Paying lip service!

While on tram no '6' to the city centre of Zagreb, I saw a long wall of artistic expressions. I was a little slow in getting out my camera and not prepared, and hence this shot was a little washed out. But I love how it turned out! =) My accidental artistic expression!

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

The little things one does in the name of love... =)

Just when I was snapping photos of Zagreb's main square of Trg Bana Jelačića (or Trg Josipa Jelačića), I saw a heartwarming scene of an elderly man helping his wife (I supposed) to cross the tram lines safely. I hope that hubby and I would be this loving when we are old and frail! =)

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Love the little streets of Zagreb...

Zagreb is actually pretty hilly, like this inclined street of Kaptol.

Making a grand entrance!

Really love to photograph churches from the boulevard leading to them, and St Mark's Church was no exception. =)

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Museum of a different kind! =D

This museum is dedicated to failed relationships, must be one of a kind in the world! There is something for everyone... no wonder Zagreb is known as the city with a million hearts. =)

Zagreb was pretty cloudy and gloomy when we arrived but after we took our own sweet time walking around the city, the skies started to clear and the sun finally showed its face. Haha and I pretty much have 2 sets of photos of the before and after "sun-comes-out".

Stately neo-Renaissance Mimara Museum (Muzej Mimara).

Formerly a grammer school, now a museum of diverse art collection, from Raphael, Rembrandt, Goya to Renoir.

From Russia with Love!

From 1919 to 1977, the Orient Express used to stop here at the Zagreb Train Station (Glavni Kolodvor). The James Bond film "From Russia with Love" featured Sean Connery in this train station as a passenger enroute to Istanbul.

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Leading the charge!

Forming part of Lenuci's Green Horseshoe is a green square, Trg Kralja Tomislava, named after Tomislav (the first king of the medieval state of Croatia). The equestrian statue is modelled after him. The yellow art-nouveau style Art Pavilion (Umjetnički paviljon u Zagrebu) formed the backdrop of this square.

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Trg Kralja Tomislava is an excellent meeting place to catch up and laze in the sun when the weather is good or feed the pigeons. Like this man here... the pigeons love him and flock to him when he came along. Guess he knows that the way to a bird's heart is through its stomach! Haha =D

The eques

Painting a pretty picture...

Constructed in 1897, the
Art Pavilion (Umjetnički paviljon u Zagrebu) is the only space in Zagreb that was specifically designed to host large art exhibitions.

 Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

A walk of life...

This lovely tree-lined path resides on the last square of Lenuci's Green Horseshoe. I always get the feeling of openness and tranquility walking along such paths. =)

Back to where we all started... Trg Bana Jelačića (or Trg Josipa Jelačića).

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

What a little sunshine can do!

It totally transformed Trg Bana Jelačića (or Trg Josipa Jelačića) from nice to stunning!

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

The square's namesake...

Trg Bana Jelačića (or Trg Josipa Jelačića) is named after Ban Jelačića, a 19th-century viceroy who led the Croatian troops into a losing battle against Hungary. It stood there from 1866 to 1947 before Tito, who regarded Jelačića as a symbol of Nationalism, ordered its removal. It was taken out from cold storage in 1990 by Franjo Tuđman's government and returned to the square once again.

Love the colours radiating from this photo, special credit goes to the lady in red! ;)

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary... what a mouthful! =D It was formerly known as St Stephen's.

An earthquake in 1880 caused substantial damage to the original Gothic-style cathedral and it was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style.

My backward glance...

As we were walking to the bus stop to head to our next destination, I suddenly turned my head to look back. This was the view I saw and it was even more beautiful than the previous photos of the Zagreb Cathedral that I had spent half an hour taking, right under the cathedral!

Feels apt to say that... sometimes, things are best admired from afar.

Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Not your usual tourist spot...

What lies behind these grand cupola-lined walls is the final resting place of thousands of Croats.

What's a scaredy cat like me doing in a place like that?! Luckily no Casper tales to tell.

Mirogoj Cemetery, Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Gateway to the netherworld...

Mirogoj Cemetery, Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Main facade of Mirogoj Cemetery...

Haha you may ask why no photos of the gravestones???Although I have visited a number of cemeteries in several countries, but I have made it a point to not to aim my photo directly at the gravestones. Not that it will completely eliminate the risk of getting ghostly photos but at least chances of it might be minimised, I think! =D

Long shadows...

Lazy Sunday afternoon in Trg Bana Jelačića, Zagreb, Croatia (4 May 2014)

Night owl...

It was already 11 p.m. when we arrived at Pula Airport, and we still had another hour car ride into Rovinj where we would stay for the night. Haha it was so late that the airport actually shut its doors after all passengers have left the terminal! =D

Pula, Croatia (4 May 2014)

There is nothing like the smell and look of fresh laundry on a brand new day...

We arrived at the town of Rovinj almost at midnight. It was very dark and quiet as our driver drove into the Old Town to our hotel. No chance to form any impression. Many good ones were formed after we woke up the next morning to start our own walking tour. Barely walked more than 1 tiny alley before we were greeted by
this pleasant sight. Yes this was just laundry, and I might not feel any excitement looking at laundry hanging out from our homes in Singapore. But upon seeing this, I just felt so soothed by the colours and shadows cast on the building itself... so rustic yet charming at the same time.

Raising the curtain on Dalí...

Very old school noticeboard in the old town of Rovinj, Croatia. Wonder would anyone read the notice under the dripping laundry? =D

King of the hill...

Church of St Euphemia (Sveta Eufemija), not only has to be the biggest baroque building in the whole of Istria but it also has to be the most prominent on the hilltop of the Old Town. =)

On the top of the 60-metre high bell tower sits a copper statue of St Euphemia on a spire, which spins around to show the direction of the wind with her right hand! How cool!

Trinkets for sale...

Every stairway leads to a new discovery...

Stairways are a common sight in the Old Town since it is built on a hill. Though it can be tiring climbing up and down these steps, for a tourist like me, seeing such staircases means new and exciting possibilities of places waiting to be discovered.

Rovinj, Croatia (5 May 2014)

Come into the light...

Climbing these ancient, rickety old
wooden steps up the 60-metre high bell tower of the Church of St Euphemia is definitely not for the faint-hearted. The gaps between each step are wide. Trust me, you would not want to make a misstep into one of those gaps, not when you are 60 metres above the ground. Although I am not afraid of heights, this particular stairway made me extremely scared that I would fall right through (did not help when thoughts of earthquakes kept flashing through my mind) until I was clinging onto the wooden handrails for my dear life as I climbed up! Going down was even scarier, in my opinion. =D

What goes up must come down...

My knees were so wobbly and hands were so clammy while climbing down these steep, old wooden stairs. Look at the wide gap between each step and you know a misstep is a no-no! No joke! I had to gather my courage and take a very deep breath before I made my way down, followed by several deep breaths and heart thumping moments along the way down when I had to give up my hold of the handrails to the more needy like the elderly who were climbing up in the opposite direction! Eeks!

When staying at Hotel Istra, you can be assured that your morning call comes in the most natural and purest form, compliments from the island's seagull. =D

My fixation!

Even though I could have taken the easy way out by taking a photo of the Church of St Euphemia (which is two islands away, on the mainland) without the dangling tree branches, but I thought I should challenge myself and my camera by getting a clear focus through a very very tiny gap between the branches. It was hard especially since my camera lens was bigger than the gap but I was happy that I tried and did it. =)

Real or not?

I did a double take when I saw this... the sculpture looks real enough!

Crveni otok (Red Island or Sveti Andrija), Croatia (5 May 2014)

Venetian influence...

It figures when Venice is just across the Adriatic Sea from Rovinj, and Rovinj was under Venetian rule for a long period of time, the architecture of buildings in Rovinj naturally resemble those in Venice. Formerly an island, the narrow channel separating the island was filled in, and henceforth Rovinj became a peninsula.

Shuttered windows...

Good to know that any way would lead you to the same place. =)

Fish bone stuck in the most peculiar place... the doorway!

This is the entrance to an art gallery. Maybe the reaction from seeing the prices of the art pieces is like having a fish bone (in this case, the entire fish bone) stuck in the throat. =D

Open gallery...

Saw this photo gallery set alongside the waterfront of the Old Town of Rovinj, Croatia (5 May 2014). I think the photo gallery was very well-illuminated indeed! =)

To infinity and beyond!

Doesn't that look like Buzz Lightyear from the animated film "Toy Story" heading to space! =D

Fiery sun!

One of the nicest sunsets I have ever seen in my life. Adriatic Sea as seen from Rovinj, Croatia (5 May 2014).

Early morning... 8 o'clock precise.

Wanted to wake up much much earlier to take the blue light in the early morning but just too sleepy and jetlag to do so... so this is my best "early morning" shot.

Across the channel...

This is the summarised view of the UNESCO World heritage Site old town of Trogir from across Trogirski Channel. The most prominent building on the island of Trogir is the Cathedral of St Lovro (Katedrala Sveti Lovrijenac) with its 47-metre high tower.

Trogir, Croatia (8 May 2014)

An accident waiting to happen...

Saw this peculiar sight of a seemingly unmanned speedboat speeding along the Trogirski Channel. Took me a few seconds to realise that there was someone bending down at the bow of the boat. Not sure how that will steer the boat. =P

Trogir, Croatia (8 May 2014)

Life in a palace...

This is something that I did not expected to see... living houses within a palace! Yes certainly did not expect to see laundry hanging over the walls of a palace. This photo is taken within the Diocletian's Palace, Split, Croatia. Diocletian's Palace is really unique as it is a living museum with shops, homes, hotels, restaurants, churches!

Split, Croatia (8 May 2014)

Re-learning how to read the time...

I took this photo about 7 plus in the evening. At first, I thought this clock has gone cuckoo and hence it was showing 3 plus. Haha but the joke is on me... the clock is accurate. If you look closer, you will realise that it is a 24-hour clock!

Gems of the pristine Adriatic Sea...

Well-known party island of Hvar (foreground) and Pakleni Islands (background), Croatia (9 May 2014)

Hvar has almost the same pronunciation as "huat" (Hokkien slang for getting rich). So when going to Hvar, you can say "I am going to HUAT ar!"

Seasons in the sun...

It was a sunny spring day at Fortress Fortica Španjola. After enjoying the fantastic bird's eye views down onto the town and harbour, and out across the sea to the Pakleni Islands, I turned to walked back to my car. I saw this simple scene of long grasses on the fortress wall blowing gently in the wind from the corner of my eye. I just had to take a photo cos it looked like they were enjoying themselves too!

I always wonder why do people dock their boats in the middle of nowhere, how do they get to them? Do they have to swim to their boats? Hmm...

Going around in circles...

Fountain Onofrios (Velika Onofrio Fontana), a polygonal fountain with 16 stone-carved maskerons, is a meeting point for many. I can imagine people walking around in circles looking for their family members or friends, especially when it gets extremely crowded. =)

An uphill task!

The restless waters make it especially difficult for the kayaker not to crash into one of the many protruding rocks in this area.

Reading the situation...

Make a choice: Circumvent the danger or dive right in. This is a thrill seeker kayaker riding the choppy waves close to the breakwaters at the foot of the Walls of Dubrovnik, Croatia (12 May 2014), on a bad weather day.

Dubrovnik, Croatia (13 May 2014)

The very important deciding factor in my selection of hotels in Dubrovnik! =D

This island was the first thing I saw when I woke up and the last thing I saw before I slept during my stay in Dubrovnik Palace Hotel. Although the island is static but the view is ever-changing cos of the weather and time of day. Great place for sunset! Every hotel room has a balcony and is sea-facing. What more could ...
I ask for?

Prior to booking this hotel, I had already booked another hotel in Dubrovnik. But when I saw the accompanying photos for this hotel online, I was sold, and that first hotel was history! I just had to stay here. Even though it is a little far from the Dubrovnik Old Town, it is worth it. Haha it is one of the few hotels that I stayed during this trip where my car could drive up to the hotel driveway, without dragging our heavy luggage for a long distance! =)

Otočić Grebeni as seen from Lapad, Dubrovnik, Croatia (13 May 2014).

You can imagine why this was one of the film sites of the "Game of Thrones".

This aerial viewpoint of Dubrovnik was my accidental discovery... I was driving along the coastal road from Montenegro towards the city of Dubrovnik, and suddenly saw ahead there was a narrow one-lane, two-way switchback road leading all the way up to the top of Mount Srđ (the mountain which forms the backdrop for Dubrovnik), and I thought "What the heck... I have driven even more challenging roads than this in this trip. I can do it!" So I decided not to follow my GPS and up I went! Here was my reward.

Dubrovnik, Croatia (17 May 2014)

Leisurely walk...

Close to sunset, the sun glare was coming down really strong but I really like how it made silhouette out of the palm trees yet at the same time gave definition to the clouds and blue sky behind. Coincidentally there were 2 people pushing their baby prams along the Old Town's promenade, one behind the other.

Cavtat, Croatia (17 May 2014)

Cruising into the sunset...

Though it is nice to view the sunset from a yacht but I think viewing it from the shore is even better cos I get to shoot the yacht plus the sunset. =)
